이미 2004년에 ‘A Preview’라는 EP앨범을 내고, 2005년말에는 ‘Colorful Express’라는 걸작 1집 앨범을 발표한 페퍼톤스였지만 몇개월전까지만 해도 나는 ‘페퍼톤스의 존재를 전혀 모르고 있었다. 인디밴드였던 탓도 있고, 국내음악에 별 관심이 없었던 탓도 있었던 것 같다. 아무튼 여차 저차해서 들어보게 된 페퍼톤스의 음악은 그야말로 ‘따봉!’인 별 10개를 줘도 아깝지 않을 좋은 음악들로 가득 차 있었다. 인디밴드와는 절대 안 친한 친구도 이미 들어보았다는데 왜 나는 못 듣고 있었던 걸까… 자책하고 싶을 정도로 이미 오래전 앨범인 것이었다. ‘Colorful Express’ 앨범을 듣고 몇일간은 ‘100%의 앨범이란 바로 이런것이야’라는 생각을 하며 음악을 듣고 또 들었다. 5월 한달간은 질릴까봐 걱정이 될 정도로 이 앨범만을 계속 들었던 것이다.
학교를 왔다 갔다 하면서 한달동안 하루에 한번 혹은 그 이상을 꼭 들었으니 꽤 많이 들었다고 생각했다. 그래서 오늘 iTunes를 통해 iPod의 플레이 횟수를 조회해보니 가장 많이 들었던 곡이 60회다. 하루키는 ‘노르웨이의 숲’을 쓰면서 비틀즈의 ‘서전트 페퍼즈 론리 하츠 클럽 밴드’ 앨범을 120회정도 들었다고 말했다. 그 당시에는 그게 얼마나 많이 들었던 건지 짐작할 수 없었지만 지금은 알 것도 같다.
1집 ‘colorful express’에서는 타이틀이었던듯 한 ‘Ready, Get Set, Go!’는 마치 만화 주제곡같은 경쾌함과 그루브함이 좋고, 바로 이어지는 ‘Superfantastic’에서는 보컬 deb의 솔직한 영어발음과 풋풋한 느낌도 좋다. ‘세계정복’은 또 어떤가. 스타크래프트의 아카데미를 클릭할때 나오는 괴성과 함께 시작하기에 꽤 심각할 줄 알았지만 이건 너무나도 평화로운 세계정복이다. 칸노요코의 영향을 많이 받았다는데 확실히 경쾌한 점에 있어서는 그 영향이 느껴지는 것 같다. 1집이 너무 좋아 EP앨범인 ‘a preview’앨범도 들어봤는데 첫곡 ‘shameless’나 ‘튤립송’의 발랄함은 1집에 전혀 뒤지지 않는다. 페퍼톤스 음악의 또 한가지 장점은 대부분의 곡들이 사랑과는 별 관련이 없는 그냥 즐겁고 신나는 가사를 가진 곡들이라는 것. ‘SuperFantastic’의 가사를 보면 확실히 알 수 있다. 요즘같은 시대에 이렇게 건전한 가사라니…

언젠가는 이 앨범들도 나의 선호도에서 그 빛을 잃어갈지도 모르지만 아직까지는 나에게 100%의 의미를 가진다. 빨리 2집이 나오기를 바랄 뿐이다.
